Book Review: Never Eat Alone

Time to start something new here on the DB, and we’ll call them Book Reviews (for lack of a more imaginative term). First up is Never Eat Alone.

I started reading Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi on a flight to a photo conference earlier this year. Wow – what a book. I saw its potential so quickly that I started over after reading just a few chapters, taking notes on all the important points.

As the title suggests, the book is about building your business through relationships. We’ve all heard that relationships are the key to success (now more than ever). But in this book, Keith really digs into the particulars of why this works, how to do it, the people you will run into, and more. It’s written in a way that’s applicable to both the entrepreneur and the company employee – the techniques work for both.

The overall theme is that success only comes about by making other people more successful. So, your focus must be others. You have to be generous, and not ‘keep score’. You also need to find out who the ‘connectors’ are. These are the people that have an extensive network, and they are everywhere. Don’t just look for them in your work, but all around you – restaurant owners, journalists, etc. Focus on helping them, and eventually become part of their network.

Another critical aspect to success, according to Keith, is to find mentors and mentees. Cultivate knowledge transfer to and from you.

This is a great book which I know I’ll be referring to again and again! Have you read it? What were your impressions?

Happy Mother's Day!

Here’s wishing all of you moms out there a very happy Mother’s Day. Our day has been great so far. We enjoyed a nice brunch at Zoot, and right now Lisa is starting her ’12 days of fitness’ program (basically it’s an extension of the boot camp workout she’s already been doing). Here’s a shot from this morning before we left:

And here’s a pic of my mom. This is from 2007 when Trevor was just a few weeks old. Happy Mother’s Day, mom! We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks.

Alex: Voices In His Head

Alex is a fun guy from a great family. I photographed his sister years ago, and his mother was the first person to sign up for the upcoming Headshot Shootout. When I told her about some of the new directions I was going with for seniors, we set a date to shoot Alex.

Alex is into his PS3. Now, I’m an X-Box person myself, so I tried not to hold that against him too much. His career interests, however, are quite cool – he wants to do creative voice work for shows, games, and more!

As with all of my seniors, we talked about ideas to show these varied interests, and so we ended up downtown with a chair, a PS3, and a microphone.

Hayli: Shopper and Shooter

I love it when I get to explore the personalities and interests of my clients. Meet Hayli. She’s a student who loves to shop. Ok, that much we expect. But how many shoppers do you know that also love to shoot? We’re talking rifles. Shotguns. Anything.

During our planning for this shoot, we discussed several ideas and locations. I was specifically looking for ways to bridge the gap between her two interests, and I think we succeeded below. A big special thanks to Dave McLaughlin for assisting, Maris for doing an incredible job with the makeup, and Nimai for watching over us to make sure we didn’t break anything (we almost passed that last point). Also, many thanks to Fab’rik and the property management people at the Hill Country Galleria for helping us create some memorable images for Hayli.
