Announcing KillTheAmbient. Because the sun is evil.

I am excited to announce the launch of a new blog, KillTheAmbient.com.

KTA was designed to offer my thoughts on lighting, business, marketing, and any other aspect of photography that sounds interesting. While I hope the info I post there will be valuable, it will definitely also have a little bit of humor thrown in for good measure. For example, where else can you read that you should get pregnant to guarantee new camera gear, or pack heat when traveling?

Down the road, I might offer some training programs at the site if there’s enough interest. But for now, visit the site, sign up for updates, and enjoy the curiously fun photo tips and comedic stylings of yours truly.

10 Years Ago We Freaked

10 years ago, I was working for a government contractor in DC. All the talk in the beltway was about the Y2K issue. You remember, right? That situation where all the computers of the world would blow up because software wasn’t written to handle a year starting with a 2. Of course, it never really materialized into anything as catastrophic as was being predicted.

In 1998, I was still a Lieutenant in the Air Force at the Pentagon. There, I had the opportunity to design the official government Y2K logo. It’s interesting looking back at this, because I would do it completely different now. At the time, my boss (hi Jade) asked me to come up with something, and then later we found out that it was the official stamp of approval for Y2K-certified projects.

I had to go digging around online to find it, and this is the biggest size I came across. I’ve got the files on a hard drive somewhere though.

The Most Important Thing I learned in Art College

This comes via APhotoEditor.com, and I think it’s spot on:

The Most Important Thing I learned in Art College … is that the fuel on which it runs is a kind of delusional arrogance. It’s the belief that both the world and people’s perceptions need to be changed, and the best way to do it is through nonsense art, nonsense words, and nonsense clothes.

Tuesday's Tidbits

It’s Tuesday and rainy, so here are some miscellaneous things I’ve decided to share:

Weis is out. After a less-than-stellar performance, Charlie Weis is out as head coach of Notre Dame. I totally understand why they got rid of him, but I still feel bad for him and his family. Especially his son, who’s had to endure a lot of flak at school (and will undoubtedly receive even more now that the decision is final).

Blog Challenge. My friend and awesome photog Shannon Cunningham has challenged herself to blog every day in December. If you catch her missing a day, you can win a portrait session or print credits. How cool is that? I think I will try to keep up on posting for the month of December to show solidarity with her.

Tiger Woods got hit with a minor traffic infraction for his wreck. I suspect that the citation will be the least of his worries in the coming days/weeks.

Christmas cards have arrived and are currently being mailed out. They rock. Look for a post here on Monday about them.

Looking for a few good fans

I’ve jumped on the latest bandwagon and created a Facebook fan page. If you don’t know about them, pages give you another way to connect with friends on Facebook. In addition to being a Facebook friend and seeing everything I’ve got going on, you can become a fan of the page and just find out about photo-related postings (like new shoots, behind-the-scenes videos, etc). One cool aspect is that we don’t have to be friends for you to be a fan of the page!

In other words, pick the level of your interest: friend or fan. Or, both.

Now, rather than just ask you to become a fan and leaving it at that, I’m prepared to sweeten the deal. For everyone who becomes a fan by this Sunday, May 3rd, I’ll send you my photo tips e-book for free. You’ll definitely find a few goodies in there to improve your own pocket-camera photography! The email link will go out on Sunday, so become a fan before then by heading over here!
