When I asked my friend Nicole, founder of the amazing candle company @luxillumecandles , if she happened to have a scent close to Disney’s Polynesian Resort, I wasn’t expecting this amazing shipment to arrive at my door! Nicole included a sample of her ‘The Spirit of Ohana’ and ‘Pineapple Float’ candles. And she tossed in a tiki glass too! They smell AMAZING! Growing up in the 1980s was just too much fun. Yes, we had the Rubik’s Cubes and the parachute pants, but we also had the real beginnings of the summer blockbuster. It seemed like every year there was a new, *original* movie to enjoy, with great characters and a great story. And many of those movies were scored by the legendary composer John Williams. I remember getting a Star Wars soundtrack on vinyl back in the day (which I’m still looking for in all of my boxes in the attic). It was my first introduction to film music, and to John Williams in particular. Since then, I’ve amassed a healthy collection of film scores from all sorts of composers, and it makes up the bulk of my music library. I decided to create a painting honoring Johnny and all of the magical contributions he’s made to film over the last 60 years! It’s called “The Music of My Youth” and is now available on the website. Did you hear the one about the family that went to the @popcatsshow in downtown Austin so their son could meet the amazing cat rapper @iammoshow, only to come home with a new kitten? Meet Leo. Or has he’s been called, Leo Despacito. He’s warming hearts here at home, as well as hands (as he practically fits entirely in mine). No self-respecting Christmas card company could be based in Austin without at least one image in front of the famed “Greetings From Austin” mural. It would be “inconceivable” (to quote from our family viewing of “The Princess Bride” recently). I’ve done many-a-shoot at this fine location. But for this one, we weren't actually there. Hey there! I photograph Christmas cards for families. This is one of my favorite cards from our family in recent years, mostly because I learned a lot trying to create it. The background is a miniature set I built in my studio with balsa wood, and the frozen Santa was created in 3D software. I laughed at the idea that the boys would be holding Santa hostage. Maybe they weren’t happy with their gifts from last year? Maybe they wanted certain assurances that this year would mean awesome gifts? This was a fun Christmas card to create. I used a stock image of stadium seats and then did some color adjustments to each side. The family and all the props were photographed at my studio. I had a booth at the Junior League's "A Christmas Affair" show, and this image was pretty popular among the Christmas card samples. Back in 2010, LOST was *the* show. As in, the best show. The only one to watch. And, I contend, the best tv series ever. EVER. So when the series finally was wrapping up, we decided we *had* to do a LOST card for our family. It was our only chance. But how could we pull together all this type imagery? Luckily, I have a sister. An amazing sister, in fact. One that also happens to be a professional photographer. She was in Hawaii at the time (her husband was stationed there). I asked her to go to the beach and get me some background images. For the plane, I pulled some stock images online. Lastly, we photographed ourselves in front of the house. If you know anything about the series, you’ll probably recognize our “Jacob” and our “Man In Black”.
